Seize the “Opportunity”

When the Supreme Court strikes down Roe v. Wade (as seems inevitable with today’s “leak”), Republican state legislators will fall all over each other to limit abortion. “Those woke Libs in Oklahoma want to forbid abortion after six weeks? We true Kansas Conservatives will outlaw abortion after six minutes!”

This being an election year, pretty much every GOP state legislator is striving for a video clip on Fox News (and maybe even a precious guest appearance on “Hannity”) with an anti-abortion rant. This led to some interesting debates in state capitols.

Ohio Rep. Jean Schmidt proposed a near total abortion ban in the Buckeye State. Those “snowflake” Dems countered, “What if a13-year-old girl is raped and becomes pregnant as a result. Would your bill force that teenager to have her rapist’s baby?

Jean replied, “It is a shame if that happens, but there’s an opportunity for that woman, no matter how young or old she is, to make a determination about what she’s going to do to help that life become a productive human being. The 13-year-old rape victim would be traumatized and has rights but so does the baby inside of her.”

Jean must believe that 13 year old single mothers can “seize the opportunity” and provide everything needed for that child to flourish all by herself even without the Child Tax Credit that Jean’s party unanimously opposed. Once a child is born, the Republicans say, “You’re on your own, kid.”

Of course, Jean avoided the trap that Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akins fell into back in 2012. When asked why his proposed abortion ban did not account for rape victims, Todd stated “Rape-induced pregnancies are very rare. If it’s a legitimate rape, the female body has ways of shutting the whole thing down.” If a woman becomes pregnant after rape, it wasn’t rape at all according to Todd. Fortunately, his campaign went down in flames after that. Hopefully, Todd is not in medical school hoping to become a gynecologist today.

You cannot legislate morality. This had been proven time and time again. People will always find a way around the law. Alcohol abuse is terrible, but Prohibition did not stop people from boozing it up and bootleggers grew rich. Drug abuse is terrible, but the “War on Drugs” failed. The cartels prospered. Abortion is the worst form of birth control, but before Roe v. Wade, rich people obtained safe abortions while the poor suffered back-alley procedures. Which criminal element will grow rich when abortion is criminalized again?
