Pissing Contest

Adolescent males constantly challenge each other to contests. “I can run faster / jump higher / hold my breath longer than you can.” Some students at all-male colleges in the ’60s (not that I would know) engaged in literal pissing contests. “I can piss longer / write my name in that snowbank better than you.”

Presumably post-adolescent Republican governors are now challenging each other to become “the most pro-life state in America.”

South Carolina passed a 6 week, no exception abortion ban shortly after the US Supreme Court tossed abortion laws back to the individual states. Those lily-livered liberals on the South Carolina Supreme Court ruled that it violated a woman’s constitutional right to privacy. That was the same rationale for the US Supreme Court’s Roe decision back in 1973. The US Constitution may not ensure a woman’s privacy nowadays according to Clarence Thomas and his pals, but the South Carolina Constitution still did.

Then Florida passed its 6 week, no exception abortion ban. “We can’t let Tallahassee be more pro-life than we are!” South Carolina elected a new, reliably conservative Supreme Court justice this spring. The legislature added four exceptions to the abortion law: for rape and incest up to 12 weeks of pregnancy, in cases of fatal fetal anomaly, and in cases protecting the mother’s life. The “new and improved” SC Supreme Court approved it yesterday.

Governor Henry McMaster crowed, “The Supreme Court’s ruling marks a historic moment in our state’s history and is the culmination of years of hard work and determination by so many in our state to ensure that the sanctity of life is protected. With this victory, we protect the lives of countless unborn children and reaffirm South Carolina’s place as one of the most pro-life states in America.”

Henry can now stand tall among his fellow Republican governors. Neighboring Georgia also has a 6 week abortion ban. To the north, those baby-killers in North Carolina have a 12 week ban, but what can you expect with a Democrat governor? Of course, Texas Governor Greg Abbott pisses longest and farthest with his 6 week, no exceptions ban capped with a $10 K “bounty” payable to “Christians” who report an abortion and jail terms for abortion providers.

Why must women with difficult pregnancies suffer while Republican governors out-do each other with abortion restrictions? Most of us outgrew pissing contests in college.
