My Little Margie
“My Little Margie” was a popular TV sitcom of the early 1950’s. Margie was the twenty-something daughter of wealthy, widowed Charles Farrell. Margie would get into all sorts of amusing scrapes protecting Dad from grasping money-hungry socialites. Dad would take time from golf or tennis “at the club” to extract Margie from her dilemmas and …(Closing Credits).
Seventy years later, “My Little Margie” Taylor Greene gets into all sorts of amusing scrapes protecting America from The Deep State. Fox News the extracts her with poorly-worded, insincere apologies and …(Closing Credits).
Speaking to the New York Young Republican Club over the weekend, MTG boasted, “I gotta tell you something: If Steve Bannon and I had organized January 6th, we would have won. Not to mention, we would have been armed.”
You are a sitting Congressperson sworn to uphold the Constitution, Margie. If the January 6th mob had “won”, hung Mike Pence, kidnapped Nancy Pelosi, and granted Trump a second term that he didn’t win at the ballot box, the Constitution would be in tatters.
Like all successful speakers, Margie knows how to “read the room”. Her comment followed this introduction from the NY Young Republican’s President Gavin Wax, “We want to cross the Rubicon. We want total war. We must be prepared to do battle in every arena. In the media. In the courtroom. At the ballot box. And in the streets.” The crowd went nuts. Margie could either lead them in a rousing chorus of “Red & Black” from “Les Miz” or she could further incite them with the Jan 6 comment.
Unfortunately for Margie, someone released a video of her comments. Has MTG finally gone too far? Isn’t this the very definition of sedition?
Like Charles Farrell, Fox News came to Margie’s rescue. “Fair and Balanced” as always, it gave MTG a pulpit to (sort of) apologize. “I was being sarcastic with those comments. I was not involved with Jan 6. My comments were making fun of Joe Biden and the Democrats, who have continuously made me a political target since January 6th.”
Margie cleverly combined the “I was being sarcastic” apology that isn’t an apology perfected by Donald J. Trump with the classic “Poor, Poor, Pitiful Me. The nasty Libs are out to get me” that always works on Fox News.
Well done, MTG. “My Little Margie” from 1950’s TV could not have extracted herself from a sticky situation any better.
