Bread and Circuses
Bread and Circuses” kept the proletariat of Ancient Rome docile while the senatorial class got richer and richer. Is Donnie borrowing a page from Nero’s book?
Yesterday, Donnie claimed he is preparing for a UFC match on the White House grounds to celebrate 250 years of American independence. “It will be a full fight,” he stated. “There will be 20,000 spectators. We have a lot of land there (at the White House).”
Good point, Donnie. 250 years of fireworks and barbecues is enough. Let’s celebrate the next 250 years of independence with men punching, kicking, and choking each other unconscious inside a steel cage. Surely, physical combat will draw more spectators than that lame “parade” on your birthday. You are paving over the White House Rose Garden anyway so there will be plenty of room for 20,000 drunken UFC fans. Several Roman emperors participated in gladiatorial contests themselves (and always “won”). Maybe you will strip down, enter the steel cage to the cheers of the crowd, and beat up on a (likely racial minority) bad guy.
Covering for Donnie’s verbal diarrhea is the toughest job in D.C. Karoline (with a K) Leavitt was gobsmacked by the proposed UFC Brawl. She recovered nicely. “We have no details to share beyond the president’s announcement. The president is dead serious about these plans, however.” What she really meant to say was, “Where the hell did he come up with this? I hate this job but if I keep it up, my next stop will be Fox News.”
Karoline (with a K) had another Trump statement to explain away yesterday. Donnie was on a hot streak blasting “fake news”, “radical left bureaucrats”, and bankers he called “shylocks”. Whoops! Since Shakespeare wrote The Merchant of Venice, “shylock” is the classic antisemitic slur. Donnie attempted to cover his tracks. “To me, a “shylock” is someone who lends money at high rates. I’ve never heard “shylock” used that way.”
The Man With The Highest GPA In The History Of The Wharton School, The Brilliant Businessman Who Built Trump Tower has never heard the term “shylock”, is unfamiliar with The Merchant of Venice, and probably thinks that Shakespeare is best-known for manufacturing fishing equipment. That same Man is President of the Kennedy Center. “What’s this Hamlet thing you want to schedule for the Kennedy Center? Does it have something to do with breakfast meats? Let’s hold a UFC Steel Cage Death Match that night instead.”
America will get its Circus next July 4th. Bread may be harder to come by for SNAP recipients.
