Bartman Strikes!

Ralph Bartman of Macungie wrote a scathing Letter to the Editor Saturday. I wonder whether “Bartman” is his real name or if he is a “Simpsons” fan and goes by the moniker of Bart’s superhero alter-ego.

Ralph gets right to the point. “Why is the Postal Service buying electric vehicles? We were under the impression that the Postal Service was almost broke. Every time people of my generation turn around, we have to pay more for a postage stamp. When we have to ship a package out of state, it almost pays to drive there and deliver it ourselves.”

Right on, Ralph! Also, you kids get off my lawn! Next time I’ll take your ball and keep it!

Ralph continues. “The Postal Service is buying 9,250 electric vehicles and 14,000 charging stations. Meanwhile, gas-powered vehicles are here to stay. There are gas stations all over the country.”

Thankfully, Ralph recognizes that horse and buggy mail delivery is no more. That newfangled internal combustion engine seems to have had its kinks worked out. It is “here to stay”. Does Ralph remember the oil embargoes of the ’70s when those gas stations “all over the country” were closed? Someday, the earth will run out of oil, but solar, wind, thermal, and even nuclear will always provide electricity.

Ralph closes with a bang. “Why buy those new vehicles when you don’t have the money to spend? My wife and I run our household by what means we can afford. This is a no-brainer.”

Think it through, Ralph. Those postal delivery vehicles run every day. Eventually, they will break down. If you want to continue to receive your overpriced mail or have it delivered, those funky little trucks will have to be replaced.

With the world as screwed up as it is today, choosing electric mail trucks is not at the top of the list of Things To Be Pissed Off About.
