Dear old Allentown made national news last week.
Researchers studying the motivation behind the Jan 6 riot found that 93% of the participants were White (There’s a surprise. I thought that Trump supporters were a Rainbow Coalition.)) and that they came from parts of the country where White population had dropped dramatically. Our beloved Allentown topped the list for White Flight. Its Caucasian population was 97% in 1970 and 31% in 2020.
The CBS Morning News (The one that no one watches) sent a reporter to the Queen City to interview long-time residents. Ed Frack (not Frick but Frack) lamented the good old days when you could leave your doors unlocked and everyone knew everyone else. Gary Iacocca (of Yocco’s Hot Dogs fame) lamented the closing of the original Yuccas’ at 6th and Liberty. “The problem was that the neighborhood began to change. Suddenly, there were Hispanic and soul food restaurants all over the place.” Guess what, Gary? White people would have eventually figured out that adding a dollop of chili sauce to a hot dog does not make it worth 50 cents more just like the Hispanics and Blacks did.
The CBS Morning News reporter asked Ed Frack if he was surprised that displaced Whites made up the majority of the Jan 6 rioters. “Not at all,” Ed replied. “We had some people from this neighborhood go to D.C. that day.”
Billy Joel may have to update his lyrics for “Allentown” to reflect the racism along with “shutting all the factories down”.
