A Terrific Little Town
Nazareth, PA is a terrific little town. It is home to Martin Guitar, the preferred acoustic “axe” of Willie Nelson, Bruce, and anyone else who matters. Every July 4th, it hosts The World’s Largest Kazoo-Tooting Parade as verified by Guinness. Every Thanksgiving, its Turkey Trot awards delicious pumpkin pies to (frequently hungover) runners.
Nazareth is an unlikely location for a Governor DeSantis v. Disney type “morals” showdown. When a Main Street business owner placed a sign stating “You Belong. You Matter. We Are All Nazareth” in her front window and encouraged other small business owners to do the same, the “Parents for Choice -Nazareth” sprung into action. The PC-N sent a letter to those business owners stating, “We do not need signs to virtue signal what is already taking place in our town. No one ever said that everyone is not welcome here or that they do not belong!” The PC-N encouraged a boycott of businesses exhibiting those signs.
Parents for Choice — Nazareth has more than 250 members. To join its Facebook group, Nazarenes must give a MAGA-like answer two questions:
Do you agree that parents have the sole right to determine what is best for our children — not the government? The correct response is “The prejudices and fears of past generations should be passed on to our children. Plus, you probably can teach your kids calculus and astrophysics better than some government-issued textbook”.
Do you agree that our schools should not push Diversity/Equity/Inclusion, Critical Race Theory, or Social Emotional Learning? The best answer is “My kids will never have to deal with black / brown, non-cis, or handicapped people as they go through life. Why should my kids be educated about people unlike themselves?”
A Morning Call reporter was denied access to the group to speak with its leaders.
Nazareth is a terrific little town. Some of its people are not so terrific though.
